Winter has come

First day of december has brought us some nice cold weather. It's -4 outside right now and i don't envy anyone sitting upstair on my bus at the moment. The window is all frozen still even though i just run to stockport on the motorway. The cab and lower saloon isn't too bad but could be warmer. This is the joys of a depot based outside i suppose. At least the canteen is nice and warm at work. Last year we just had portacabins which were very cold. One and a half 330s to do now. I just hope i can feel my toes soon.

  1. What is frost and temperatures with a - in front?

Sun is shining here, temperature circa +22 degrees.

I was in Manchester, this same week last year, when you had similar weather to what you have now.

I think it's time Stagecoach thought about putting the heating on now we've reached December!!! The buses are very cold at the moment.

I think it's time the heating was made an MOT requirement, then Stagecoach (and First, and the rest) would have no problem getting the heating working again.

If a car's heating breaks down, what does the owner do - go to the garage and get it fixed. Bus passengers have no control over the heating, getting it fixed etc, so we have no choice but to carry on freezing. This is tt a time when we're being encouraged to use public transport more, rather than private cars. I can see t he opposite happening if they can't sort out such a simple thing such as the heating, people coming off the buses and into their own cars.

It really shouldn't be seen as a luxury, or a lucky dip, where the heating just MIGHT work if you're lucky on the bus you're about to board. It should be a more of a statutory requirement that the bus is comfortably warm on a cold winter's day, in this day and age.

I might have said this before, might not have, but I really feel sorry for you drivers, having to drive around in freezing buses all day. We only have to travel in them for the duration of our journeys, but you drivers are in them often all day, and it's not fair. Especially with all the other stresses that come with the job.

Gosh I've written an essay. Before I end up going on any longer, I think I'll just press the Post Comment button and let it all out!

  5. Yes yes yes and yes. It's terrible. I wouldnt pay to travel on a bus everyday with no heat. Some people are only on the bus for 10 minutes. Imagine the people who are on it for an hour a day. People live in Glossop and travel to manchester on a bus from our depot. If that bus is 22153 its going to be a very cold trip because they have not had chance yet to fix the heater matrix!! It should be an mot requirement. This is a bus. Unfortunatley the law just says it should be water and wind tight. Nothing about the heat. There is things being done i promise but how quick i dont know.

  6. The tram drivers on Metrolink refuse to take out any tram on which the cab heaters are failed. Note only the cab heaters! Similarly if a heater fails inservice the tram is withdrawn and the poor souls need the heaters on all night to ensure the cab is warm in the morning. Seems that Stagecoach have double standards!

  7. Perhaps Stagecoach, First, et al and Northern Rail should do a swap of mechanics twice a year. Their's don't know how to turn the heating off on DMUs in the summer, so if you let them loose on your buses at this time of year and your engineers on their DMUs at the start of the summer...problem solved!

  8. Its not the drivers fault though. The mechanics have to tweak all of the buses individually to have the heaters on. It was something I had to do in work exoerience and took a lot of time per bus but I do agree its something that has to be done....asap.

What I am worried about though is likely event of black ice & snow, hope the drivers are ready for that :)
